
Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace, London, on May 24, 1819. She was the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, fourth son of George the Third. Her father died shortly after her death and she became heir to the throne because her three uncles who wereahead of her in succession - George the Fourth, Frederick Duke of York, and Willam the Fourth, had no children alive. People that lived in her era of reign were called ‘Victorians’, after her.

Emily Stowe
[1831-1903]
Emily Stowe was the first Canadian woman to engage in the practice of
Medicine, as well as a feminist.Though she lived and was raised in Canada, she was forced tostudy medicine in the United Staes, at the New York Medical College for Women, as no Medical school in Canada would accept her. When she returrned to Canada, in 1867, she was forced to practice illegally, becauseCanadian law said that Physicians were required to have some Canadian training. She set up an illegal practice secretly in Toronto, and continued on this until the laws changed in 1880, when she came out of hiding to begin legal practice. When she wasn’t busy with Medical business,she campaigned for womens rights, founded the Toronto Womens Literary Club, and helped establish the Toronto Womens Medical College.

Sarah Berndardt
[1844-1923]
Sarah Bernardt, also referred to as "The Divine Sarah", "The Greatest Woman sinc Joan of Arc", and "The Eighth Wonder of the World", was born in Paris, France, on October 23rd, 1844. She was one of the first "Superstars", and perhaps the most famous person in Europe in her time. People from Canada and te UnitedStates would travel across seas simply to watch her perform. She was an extremely multi-talented, specializing in theatre, sculpting, singing, and painting.

John A. Macdonald.
[1815-1891]
John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada, was born on January 11, 1815. He is the first Prime Minister to have won six majority goverments and was praised for having helped forge a nation of sprawling geographic size, with two diverse European colonial origins, and a mulitiplicity of cultural background and political views. Macdonalds politics were concervative, and he joined the conservative, or Tory, party, forming an alliance wiht George Etienne Cartier of Canada East. Macdonalds Strengths were his energy, vision, and public speaking skills.
